After watching Avatar...

Today we went to watch Avatar 3D imax. We weren't very interested in the movie when it first came out because blue colored people walking around and war is not exactly alluring. But, honey had a free movie ticket from work and an AMC gift card, so we thought why not? Free movie and since it's Imax, we might as well give this movie a try before it disappears. So I guess Avatar is not eating, cooking, or playing. Well, maybe it fits under the playing category right? I guess, this is going to be my impression and reflection of the movie. Therefore, if you have not seen this movie, do not read further because it will spoil the movie for you!

Big Bear Lake

On Saturday, I was invited to visit Big Bear City for a day trip. We planned to visit the discovery center, the big bear lake, the village, and the skiing resort. However, the trip was more centered on eating than scenery. Our day started with Yi Mei, Taiwanese style breakfast - soy milk, glutinous rice with Chinese doughnut, and turnip cake. We then set off to Big Bear lake, which took about two hours. Luckily there was no traffic because it was around 10am and most skiers are already there. We did go to the discovery center and saw the beautiful lake.

Steer and Ale Restaurant Pasadena

Roger had a day off today and we went to eat at Steer and Ale - a steakhouse at Pasadena. He went before with his friends, so now I get to try. It's on the corner of Rosemead Blvd and Foothill Blvd. I guess it's a family steakhouse restaurant that has been around since forever... I don't know exactly how long it's been around, but I do know their main customers are family, middle aged, to the elderly groups. I felt kind of out of place at first because we were the only Asians during our entire meal, but I guess it shouldn't be a big deal. The lunch special is very affordable and the meal you get definitely worth every penny. I ordered the lunch sized filet - a tender meat of 4 oz wrapped in bacon served with baked potato and garlic bread. I actually ordered mine medium, but it came out rather well. Roger ordered the specialty steak with fries and garlic bread. It came out also well instead of medium. Mine costs $5.50 and his costs $7 something. We added a side of onion rings for .99c and a soup for .99c. The meat was very tender and tasty even though it was well done already. So I thought that was a good sign. The other memorable thing was their onion rings. Rather oily but at least looked like clean oil. The batter made the outside very crunchy but thick and reminded me of corn dogs. Aside from the oily after taste, I thought it was pretty good with the BBQ sauce. Garlic bread did not really have the garlic taste but it wasn't too bad. I definitely think I will return because it's very cheap for all that food we got and I forgot to take photos, so I definitely need to go back...

Banana Cake

I've never been good at baking cakes. Usually they turn out flat, dry, or hard. I think it's because of my impatience with ingredient measurements; the baking soda, baking powder, salt, and flour. I'm more clumsy and spontaneous in the kitchen. I remember baking an orange cake that turned out like hard bread and a Boston cream pie that turned out a little dry and airy... See, cakes are not really my thing.

First Buffet of the Year

On the first of January, two thousand and ten, my family and I went to Morongo Casino in Cabazon. My dad played Baccarat, while us girls went shopping at the nearby Premium Outlet. We met up at 4.30pm for the buffet inside the casino.

(I threw a strawberry into my champagne for fun!)

日式馬鈴薯敦牛肉 Japanese style Beef stew

The last time I met up with my Ying pp~ she asked if I have 日式馬鈴薯敦牛肉 recipe (which I didn't). Since that day, everytime I think of her 日式馬鈴薯敦牛肉 came to my mind. Ha! She doesn't remind me of 日式馬鈴薯敦牛肉 but she reminded me to look for that recipe. It wasn't easy to find the recipe because I didn't know if it was really called 日式馬鈴薯敦牛肉... but I found a blog that gave me an idea. I tweaked it a little bit and got my mom to buy the ingredients. I don't have exact measurements for the ingredients here... but it should give you an idea too!
